Tuppy Owens responds to House of Lords invitation to comment, wearing the hat of sex therapist rather than SFC Chair
Tuppy's comments on the Bill in response to Lord Faulkner's question in his last email can be seen here: Comments on Bill.
Dear Dr Owens,
Thank you for your message. You will have seen that I quoted your earlier email to me in the debate. I have a great deal of sympathy for the point of view you and others are expressing on this issue.
Kind regards
Richard Faulkner 7th March 2008
Dear Lord Faulkner,
Your email was unbeleivably welcome, making history. It is the first time (since perhaps the gay rights movement) that any politician has given any positive encouragement to a pro-sex campaigner. I salute you for being brave enough to stand alone and do so.
Wearing a completely different hat, that of sex therapist, I wanted to speak out against the criminalisation of the downloading and possession of animal porn. I was invited to appear on an LBC phone-in discussion on the subject of animal sex some years ago, and the lines were busy with people telling their stories (about flat-mates and friends) with great concern and anxiety, saying there was nobody else to advise them. It is very important to keep the doors open for people seeking help, rather than turn them into prison inmates.
Enthusiasts may have a fetish for animal sex. People cannot help having a fetish, so it is cruel to criminalise them. They need help.
You probably know all this, but I was afraid that this aspect of the Bill might not be getting much criticism.
Very best wishes and thanks,
Dr Tuppy Owens (a "she", not a "he")
Outsiders Trust 11th March 2008
Dear Tuppy (if I may),
Thank you very much for your kind message.
The two days for the report stage of the Criminal Justice and Immigration Bill are 26 March and 2 April. If we are to table any amendments we should aim to do so by the end of this week. The "extreme pornography" clauses are now in Part 5, Clauses 63 onwards, and can be seen here http://www.publications.parliament.uk/pa/ld200708/ldbills/041/08041.46-49.html#j400.
I should be pleased to receive any suggestions you may have for the improvement of these.
Kind regards
Richard Faulkner
