GOVERNMENT CLAMPDOWN ON 'VIOLENT PORN'
|
- As many of you will already
be aware, the government is planning to introduce a law which
will outlaw possession of extreme pornography. The planned bill
is a knee-jerk reaction to the murder of Jane Longhurst by Graham
Coutts, who was allegedly 'addicted' to violent porn on the internet.
Despite the fact that there was plenty of evidence to suggest
that he had these interests and desires long before he saw any
of this material, a high profile campaign by Longhurst's family
- understandably looking for someone to blame - has led to the
current proposals.
If passed, this new law will make 'violent porn' as illegal as
child porn, with a maximum sentence of three years for mere possession.
What's more, the law would not differentiate between actual scenes
of violence and those which are staged. And if you had any doubts
that this is more to do with a distaste for the material rather
than any actual harm caused - even the government admit there
is no evidence proving a link between violent porn and actual
sexual violence - note that bestiality material has also been
pulled in. This would result in the bizarre situation where watching
someone have sex with an animal would result in a stiffer sentence
than actually performing the act!
This is a ridiculous law which would instantly criminalise thousands,
maybe millions of people overnight, and it is so badly worded
and vague that the police would be able to use it to suppress
just about anything outside of vanilla sex. What's more, HM Customs
and others are demanding that the law be expanded to include any
'obscene' material.
The Home Office are taking responses to the proposals from the
public until the beginning of December. You can download the
proposal document here.
The SFC's response can be read here.
The Campaign Against Censorship have also drafted a response
which you can read here.
Others can be found on Melon
Farmers and the issue is being debated on Backlash.
We urge to to respond to this plan if you wish to maintain your
freedoms and perhaps your liberty!
