SCOTTISH PARLIAMENT PLANS CRACKDOWN ON PORN
A SCOTTISH Parliament committee is to consider a crackdown on X-rated films and magazines.

MSPs on Holyrood's equal opportunities committee are organising a summit to discuss with experts whether there is a link between pornography and violence. Labour backbencher Elaine Smith said the committee had a duty to investigate the issue. "I don't think we can ignore it any longer," she said.

And fellow Labour MSP Marlyn Glen added: "The safety of women should be a real priority and what we need is the political will to push that through."

The MSPs' move follows a petition to the parliament from Scottish Women Against Pornography calling for adult material to be classed as an incitement to hatred against women.

The SFC has written the following letter:

To:
Cathy Peattie, MSP, Convenor of the Equal Opportunities Committee of the Scottish Parliament
Nichl Stephen, Deputy First Minister and Leader of the Scottish Liberal Democrats

I am contacting you on behalf of the Sexual Freedom Coalition, as a female resident of the Scottish Highlands.

The SFC is concerned to learn about some retrograde thinking that has led a Scottish Parliament committee to reconsider the legal status of pornography based on an outdated notion that pornography causes violence to women. Feminists Against Censorship proved this was not the case many years ago, and history is full of examples.

Any legislation to criminalise pornography would be incompatible with the European Convention of Human Rights.

The SFC was invited to contribute to the Liberal Democrats with their Consultation Paper on Censorship, presented to their conference on 14th March 2003. We would now like offer our expertise to your new committee.

UPDATE:
The SFC has so far received the following response:

Dear Dr Owens
Nicol has asked me to respond on his behalf regarding your email of 30 January to Cathy Peattie MSP. I am writing merely to thank you for keeping Nicol informed regarding the offer by the Sexual Freedom Coalition.

Ian Mollison
Constituency assistant to Nicol Stephen
MSP for Aberdeen South
